A different approach

I recently discovered something somewhat disappointing about Deviant art. While talking to Anmras about my Wreath Snail creature, we talked about how it's never the original characters that get all the comments/fav's, it's always the anime characters that already have the considerable fan base.
That's not to say that original characters never get any love (Compare how many people search daily for Inu-Yasha stuff, to people who search for Original artwork), it's just that you have to work harder to get it.
There's some totally spectacular original characters out there that get so many comments and favs, but they're usually done by people who clearly have so much skill and creativity that if they didn't get any comments it would be an incredible travesty against art.
That said, I've got a lot of work to do before I get to be one of those people, and I've got to start by getting back into the original character spirit. Way back when I was incredibly into Digimon, I'd always create original characters/Digimon, and invent their stories and all that fun stuff.
Lately though I find that while I'm still thinking up stories, I haven't been putting them onto paper. I've sort of slated myself into drawing just head-shots for characters, and never really doing much else.
I'm not exactly sure where this is going, but if anything I'd just like to mention that I'm going to try and focus more on creating original characters from now on. I'll still be doing buttons yes, but that's for the future. Right now I'm going to try and get better at concept design, in hopes that it'll get to that point where my original characters/designs are just as popular as my anime based art.
